Redevelopment

Laura Johnson Home is currently undergoing major redevelopments in a staged process.

The redevelopment is part of the long-term Strategic Plan of the Society for the Mount Isa Memorial Garden Settlement for the Aged and follows on from the $18.5 million dollar investment into Aged Care facilities with the new home built at 41 Clarke Street adjoining the previous facility.

Stage 1

The Laura Johnson Home OpShop has been operating in various locations in Mount Isa for many years. Stage 1 included refurbishing of one of the previous high care wings into the Laura Johnson Home OpShop, with public access now off Clarke Street.

The Laura Johnson Home OpShop is truly a local charity, whereby all proceeds remain in Mount Isa and go towards the betterment of the services delivered by the Society including to the residents of the Aged Care Home.

Stage 1 also involved refurbishing an amenities block to accommodate business tenants who operate and provide Home and Community Care services in Mount Isa and the region and a training organisation.

Stage 2

Construction has commenced on the $2 million dollar second stage of redeveloping the previous Laura Johnson Home at 3 Lucy Street.

This stage involves refurbishing 34 low care rooms to create 12 new one, two and three bedroom apartments for affordable staff accommodation for Laura Johnson Aged Care Home staff.

The project aims to assist with the attraction and retention of staff in the health and aged care arena by providing affordable staff accommodation, while adding to the Home’s sustainability.

Other not-for-profit groups in Mount Isa will benefit from being able to use the surplus apartments.

Construction commenced on the apartments on the 10 June 2015. The project will continue for nine months, sustaining around 40 jobs over that time.

Stage 3 & 4

Stages 3 & 4 will be the finalisation of the planning for western high care wing and landscaping beautification of the site.

Stage 5

In the future the Society proposes to develop further Retirement Units on the area adjacent to the current 12 Independent Units in Alex Pavusa Drive.
